Training and Brightspace

Use of the Birck Nanotechnology Center facilities requires training specific to the level of use. The initial short courses use Brightspace. Users much first enroll themselves in the course of interest, and then can access the content via Brightspace.

BNC 111 – Birck Orientation and Safety Training

Intended Audience: Birck desk occupants and laboratory users

Course Description:
A course for all BNC facility occupants or laboratory users. Policies covered include facility policies and procedures, safety policies and procedures, procedures for using chemicals in fume hoods, and the Right-To-Know program. BNC 111 is required to obtain after-hours, office, or laboratory access, and must be obtained prior to working in any BNC laboratory (dry, solvent, acid, bio, cleanroom, or bio-cleanroom).

1. Purdue uses iLab for all billing and lab access charges. There is no charge for BNC 1XX and 2XX level trainings, but you must have an iLab account setup prior to obtaining BNC access so that you can be charged for any future store room purchases, laboratory access, or recharge equipment use.

Course Content Overview:

Reviewing the BNC 111 slides and reading the Chemical Hygiene Plan
Completion the BNC 111 comprehension quiz with a 90% or better within 2 attempts.
Completion of the following Lab Safety Fundamentals coursework sections:
1. Laboratory Safety
2. University Laboratory Safety – Working Safely
3. University Laboratory Safety – Developing and Using Controls
4. University Laboratory Safety -Analyzing Chemical Hazards
5. University Laboratory Safety – Analyzing Physical Hazards
Uploading proof that you have completed the LSF courses, certification of the CHP page 81 document, and setup of iLab credentials.
Scheduling of in-person training and submission of informational text regarding your user profile.

Be sure to “accept” the badge after it has been awarded so that it will show up on your Badge collection.

BNC 200/202/206 – Cleanroom Process Review, Solvent Cleaning, and Cleanroom Training

Intended Audience: Birck Cleanroom Users
(Note: Cleanroom spectators do not need BNC 2XX level courses)

Course Description:

A multipart course consisting of:

BNC 200 – Cleanroom Process Review (Online prework for an in-person meeting)

A process questionnaire and discussion for new BNC cleanroom users about their intended work. In the meeting, the new cleanroom user will describe to the engineering staff their anticipated process requirements in detail. The engineering staff will recommend processes and process tools that will facilitate the fabrication flow.

BNC 202 – Solvent Cleaning (Online)

A training module to relay information regarding proper solvent cleaning of items typically used within the Birck Nanotechnology Cleanroom.

BNC 206 – Cleanroom Training (Online pre-work with an in-person training)

This course is for users wishing to operate in the Birck Nanotechnology Center Nanofabrication Cleanroom. It covers cleanroom protocols, gowning, safety and emergency procedures.
